Shockingly, There Are Other Games On The Schedule…

There was this one last night, where Monte’s boys made it interesting for a half. Mason bludgeoned YouDee on the boards and ran away. What say you, JayVee?

Tonight, we have a quartet:

Old Dominion at James Madison: Let’s play a game of “what if?” What if Gerald Lee isn’t actually struggling? What if teams are doubling and tripling Lee, forcing him to the perimeter to even smell the basketball? What if coaches believe nobody else on the ODU roster can beat them? What if ODUs problem–and there is a guy named Jay out there who is about to spit his coffee–is that they need Isaiah Hunter, who will score 17 points whether its on 10 shots or 22 shots?

Imagine this statement in November: it is important for JMU to hold serve at home so they can keep pace with Drexel for the fourth spot in the standings. Stop laughing, feed the ball to the JYD, and for the love of Johnny Napp, please have Kyle Swanston make a three.

JMU 65, ODU 60.

Georgia State at Drexel: Five in a row for Bruiser’s boys, with Sammie Givens picking up this week’s rookie of the week hardware. We noted-and we being a commentor-about the proficiency and growth of Jamie Harris at the point. You know Scott Rodgers.

That’s Givens, Harris, and Rodgers. Add Leon Spencer to that mix. Spencer had 12 points against the Tribe this week on 5-of-5 FG shooting, and he grabbed a team-high nine caroms in the Delaware win. Spencer is averaging 13.6 ppg and 6.8 rpg over the past five games.

Drexel’s reserves scored 38 points against UD and contributed 22 points and 14 boards versus W&M. Oh yeah, and there’s Tra Hawthorne, a dangerous shooter.

Time to stop pretending-this Drexel outfit is a well-rounded team. As good as Drexel has been, it’s been since Battle, Goss, Schneider, etc. were on the court that Drexel could list multiple names that were threats.

Drexel 68, Georgia State 58.

Towson at William & Mary: I’m going to have to plead no contest on this charge. The Tribe has lost five in a row and the Tigers six in a row.

I’ll go with the “together” team, playing at home on a cold January night.

The College 61, Towson 54.

Hofstra at UNCW: Yeah, I know all about Chuckie Jenkins putting the wheels back on his season and his Bigshot routine at Madison. Fine. But how about a little bit of love for my man Corny Vines? He’s dropping big threes left and right. After several games of Bad Corny, we’re seeing Good Corny, who is quietly second in the CAA in threes made with 56.

Sure, The Dub picked up a fun win on Saturday, a double-OT winner at Towson. It also snowed in North Carolina last week. I just think Pecora is going to pound, pound, pound the ball inside until UNCW can’t take it. Wolf, Tomko, and company are going to have to play offense against a bevy of Hofstra guards that won’t wear themselves out playing pitch and catch with the big men. Side note: I do like that Dom Lacy is coming on, and that Montez Downey is healthy and a factor.

The Pride, which is 8-1 in games decided by five points or less, has trailed in the final minute in four of those eight wins and Jenkins has scored the points to put Hofstra ahead to stay in all of them. Gents, that’s a sign of toughness (and a tough out come March). After this game, Hofstra will remain 8-1 in games decided by five points or less.

Hofstra 79, UNCW 72.

  1. So now you’re ignoring our leading rebounder and #3 scorer eh? 9/7 a game isn’t worth some love? :o) It’s funny cause I really want us to be that under the radar team you aren’t afraid of… And according to the poll I put in the field, we still are.

And from the nitpick department, Schmieder not Schneider. How can you not be upto speed on our 01-02 roster?

I’ll say this too, as much as we’re hurt by the tiebreaker with JMU, the game we have circled is the home game vs ODU. Don’t they resemble W+M from last year? They’re like the team that you are leading the whole game, but you never actually put them away, and because you never open up that lead the whole game you are waiting for that other shoe to drop when they make a run and tie things up at the end and anything can happen… That’s ODU right now I think. Hanging in there just enough, a win tonight, then @ DU, and they could slide right back into a bye.

  2. See, this is what I get for trying to get things done sitting in an airport. Of course we neglected Mr. Neisler. Apologies.

  3. lol…well it’s nighttime, so I almost spit into my Woodford Reserve… not my coffee. We didn’t need Zai back, just GLee playing his arse off. Be good.!!!
