The Week in P-Review…

First, let me say this: was it four overtime games this weekend? I honestly lost count, but I can say with certainty–I’ve never seen a weekend with so many great games. Sloppy early season slugfests, yes, but Bloodpumpers nonetheless.

We Could Be Heroes, If Just For One Day

Arminas Urbutis, Hofstra: Pitsie grabbed 16 rebounds–six on the offensive glass–in the Hofstra win over Western Michigan. With Unnamed Szabo back from NCAA exile, Urbutis will see his PT diminish. It’s refreshing to know you have that in reserve.

Jonathan Adams, ODU: Five points and one rebound. Big deal. Oh, it was his three with five seconds to play that won it for the Monarchs. But here’s why he’s on the Hero List today: years ago Blaine Taylor told me he’d signed Alex Loughton’s replacement, and he meant leadership. All Adams has done for three years is whatever the coach (or his teammates) asked. If this is Adams’s only “tell my grandkids” moment, we are happy for him.

TJ Gwynn, VCU: He was buried last year on the VCU bench and spent most of practice battling a nagging back. But Gwynn was 8-8 from the field–granted five were layups off of ridiculous Eric Maynor passes–and scored 20 points. He showed that perhaps VCU deosn’t need a post player; rather someone who can score down low in traffic.

Eugene Spates, Nor’Easter: Everyone connected to the Huskies program tabbed Spates as the key. So far, Spates has surpassed everyone’s wishes and forced himself into a starting role. His 34 minutes against Providence were as important as his five threes.

Joe Dukes, Georgia State: Fill up that stat sheet, Joe. All you read about were the guys from Mississippi and MState. Dukes/Mendez in 09?

Bears Watching

The amount of fuzz on Tony Shaver’s upper lip.

Delaware’s point distribution–Egerson (28), Fonzie (28), and BJ (11) scored 67 of 77 Hens points.

Towson’s minutes distribution–the suspended players are trickling in, and these guys are searching for an identity.
