Sometimes, Ugly Shoes Fit…

We hate the whole philosophy of a team being better because eight players marginally step up their production. But it fits with Mason as the key to success this year.

You know Jim Larranaga will have them defending. But what we don’t know is the relative black hole left by Will Thomas and Folarin Campbell. It is a consistency hole and it will be felt.

Three Key Statements

  1. Cam Long is getting great press, but nobody in the conference has larger shoes to fill.
  2. Darryl Monroe changes the makeup of this team by giving them a scoring threat on the block.
  3. This year’s Cam Long is Andre Cornelius.

Season Shaper(s)

  1. Can John Vaughan be consistent enough to be the man? He scored in double figures in 17 straight games last season, but tallied just 15 points total in the three CAA tournament victories.
  2. Monroe is a key because if he is hurt or not playing well, this team really doesn’t have a post player. I love Chris Fleming, but he doesn’t count. You don’t game plan against Chris Fleming.
  3. Talent is talent, but surviving the ups and downs of freshman talent will determine how good this team is. See: Vlad Moldy Vino.

The Underdog
Louis Birdsong. This is guy worth paying admission to see. He’s not going to score a bunch, but when he scores it is in bunches. And he can overwhelm opponents in short bursts. It’s really fun when Birdsong gets going. I’d bet Larranaga dreams of 32 minutes from Birdsong.

Hey Coach, What Happens If…

  • For all his energy, Dre Smith starts the season 3-25 from the new arc, and he is being outplayed by a freshman?
  • Vaughan goes into a funk and you need a basket with 12 seconds on the clock?
  • Chris Fleming gets mad at me and starts playing like the CAA tournament Chris Fleming?

If you can look into the seeds of time, and say which grain will grow and which will not, speak:

I’d bet Doc Nix’s suit that George Mason utilizes a tie breaker this year in determining their CAA tournament seed. They just smell like 11-7 or 10-8. Larranaga is a mesher, and Mason has talent to mesh. Place range is third through sixth.

  1. I love CAA Tournament Chris Fleming.

Larranaga can dream of Birdsong getting 32 minutes if he can also dream that a foulout is 8 fouls.

Can’t wait to see how Cam/Dre/Vaughn work together.

  2. Great pts. about my Patriots. I think you’re dead on on almost all of it…but, I’m still waiting for Birdsong to show up and be a consistent CAA player. If Mason can get ANYTHING consistent from him, Monroe, and Fleming (and perhaps Pearson, the newbie) down low, we have a shot to contend. But, if this team lives or dies based on the 3-pt. shooting of streaky guys like Smith and Vaughan…it’s gonna be a long, cold winter.
