Little Deuce Coupe

Coupla quickies:

There is no way on the face of the Earth the committee (I need to give them a nickname today…) can take Mason over Hofstra. There is just no way. HU has beaten GMU twice in the past 10 days, has at least an identical RPI, and has its best guard on the floor for the first round game.

This spells bad news in Fairfax.

And as adamant as I am about that fact, I am just as adamant that Jim Larranaga deserves everyone’s praise. People espouse ethics, values, and morals. Those are easy things to have when it isn’t you making the decision. Bravo.

Old RPI numbers, weighting home and road victories the same, in case you cared:

Mason–39
Hofstra–44
Texas A&M–43
Maryland–36
California–55
Syracuse–21
Creighton–46
Fla State–52

  1. Mason and Hofstra’s numbers are almost identical down the line when comparing the teams, EXCEPT:

    Non conference RPI: GMU-33 HU-60
    Non conference SOS: GMU-45 HU-278

I think those numbers counter balance HU’s two wins over Mason.

Now if we could just get the committee to ignore the Skinn debacle. 😉

  2. I just don’t see how Mason’s SOS is SO MUCH BETTER than Hofstra’s .. and Hofstra gets picked over Mason for beating them at Hofstra and on Neutral Court. Just doesn’t add up to me. If WF wins 1 game in the ACC tourney and Miss St. wins 1 game … Mason’s SOS looks EVEN BETTER.

But who knows, the committee is known to do stupid things.

  3. Hofstra is one of the hottest teams in the nation right now. Besides beating Mason twice, they also took care of #76 VCU in the quarterfinals (which was pretty much an away game since VCU is in Richmond). Who did GMU beat to get to the semis? #241 Georgia State. Oh, yeah…they needed overtime to do it.

The NCAA tourney is about guard play. With that punk Skinn out for the first game (should be the rest of the season really), I don’t see how you could take Mason over Hofstra’s 3-headed monster of Stokes-Rivera-Agudio. While I would like to see both teams get their tickets punched, it would be outrageous to take Mason and not Hofstra.
