Jay Bilas on

“In every major conference, there are multiple teams that could go either way. And it is not just the idea of a team getting really hot or the wheels suddenly falling off. Every league has had periodic inconsistency, several teams that are eerily similar in ability and character, and some shaky traditional powers.

One thing seems clear: Evaluating teams based upon a historical perspective will not work this year. There are a bunch of teams that don’t have the look or feel of NCAA Tournament teams, but will still make it into the field. It’s just one of those years.”

My take: Mid majors need to shape it up, or there will be a pile of hand-wringing come March. Remember, Craig Littlepaige, chairman of the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee told me that the only history they look at is the history of this season.

It will be interesting when the committee is faced with Kansas or Wake with similar but worse arguments than Wichita State or Old Dominion. I think you know the way it will go…

But Bilas is right. There are going to be a number of heavy-hitters with questionable resumes. It should make for a strikingly debatable Selection Sunday and Myopic Monday.
